A Guide for the Perplexed
- Category: 1970 - 1979
- Author: E.F. Schumacher
- Year: 1977
- Note: A damning critique of scientific materialism - the summation of his life's work.
Review
His final book published in 1977 shortly before his death was presented by Schumacher as being the summation of his life's work. It amounts to a statement of the philosophical basis for 'Small is Beautiful', and is also a condemnation of materialistic scientism - with many similarities to Theodore Rosak's 1973 'Where the Wasteland Ends'
As a philosophical work this was not directly influential on the development of the green movement in the UK, but is a valuable account of the type of thinking and ideas that were widely shared across the green culture.
